Joe Ross is the CCBE President-Elect. Previously he served as chair of the CCBE Legislative Committee and member of the CCBE Nomination Committee. He was first elected to countywide office in 2012, when he won a seat on the San Mateo County Board of Education. He was re-elected to consecutive four-year terms in 2016 and 2000. He served as Board President in 2017.
Prior to elective office, Mr. Ross managed an after-school program serving over 1000 middle school students in Northern California. Subsequently he worked with numerous higher education institutions to help bring their academic programs online. He also helped develop a free mobile app to provide free college counseling for high school students. Outside of education, Mr. Ross continues to serve as counsel to a venture studio and several startups based in California.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Ross served for eight years on active duty in the U.S. Navy, with deployments to the Middle East and Pacific, and assignments ashore in Seoul, Puerto Rico, and San Diego. Later, as Deputy District Attorney in San Mateo County, he served as sole counsel in numerous hearings and jury trials. The son of a U.S. Postal Service labor custodian, Mr. Ross was awarded a Truman Scholarship at Yale College, and earned his J.D. from Stanford Law School, where he was President of the Stanford Law Review.
